You will notice the shaft of the club drop a bit and get closer to your head than it was at the top of the swing. It will also appear that the angle between your left arm and the shaft has decreased. The decrease of this angle is called “downloading,” and it transfers the power you stored in the backswing to your downswing. When you download, you allow for a whipping action of the club shaft, which will maximize your clubhead’s speed when it contacts the golf ball.
From this face-on view, you should also begin to see your right shoulder, while your upper body should be sinking. If you draw a line across the top of your head at the top of the swing, you will notice there is more space between your head and the line during the transition, because your upper body drops down while it squares up to the target line. The average Tour professional will drop one to two inches during the transition, and this should be a goal for you as well. The drop happens because your chest squares up to the ball while moving into what is called a “stacked” position, meaning your upper body has shifted forward into the center of your stance. You should also notice the movement of your head toward the target. If you draw a line on the right side of your head at the top of the backswing, you will notice the space here in the transition has increased.
Golf is no different from any other sport in which you are moving an object forward: when you transfer your weight correctly, your head and body move in the same direction as the ball. However, there is one major difference between the mechanics of golf and those of other ball-related sports. Simply, you don’t have to help the ball into the air, because the club does the work for you. Many amateur golfers struggle with this concept—they fail to move their body in a forward direction because of their desire to hit the golf ball into the air. The common mistake is to move your body up and back, rather than down and forward. If you commit this critical error, you won’t see your body moving forward toward the target during the transition. The root cause of this misplaced desire to help the ball get into the air is the fact that the golf ball is sitting on the ground. In normal circumstances, when you attempt to get anything into the air, there is an upward motion of your body. Further, if you’ve played sports requiring you to throw or hit a ball, that instinct has been reinforced. A natural opening of the chest to the sky occurs. In fact, this is the exact opposite of what should happen in golf. When you swing the club correctly, your head and chest will move forward and down, and the ball will have no problem getting airborne.
Many amateurs who make this mistake also lose power in their golf swing during the transition.
